Amboseli lies north-west of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the border with Tanzania. The park covers 392sq kms, and forms part of the much larger 3,000sq kmsAmboseli ecosystem. Large concentrations of wildlife occur here in the dry season, making amboseli a popular tourist destination. The national park embodies five main wildlife habitats: open plains, acacia, woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland.

Found within the park is a temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, that floods during heavy rainfalls. The park is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty as the landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Kilimanjaro.

Climatic Conditions:

Climate is mainly hot and dry.

Attractions:

Mount Kilimanjaro observation hill which allows an overall view of the whole park especially the swamps and elephants. The swamps below the observation hill hosts many buffaloes, elephants, hippos and a variety of water fowl like Pelican, Egyptian goose.

For bird-life lovers, bird life at the park is in abundance especially near the lakes and swamps. The Madagascar Squacco Heron shows up in intervals and the long toed lapwing is a resident in small numbers.

Wildlife:

The park has over 80 different mammals to be found. Few visitors will go home without superb elephant pictures with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.

Access:

The main road into the park is from Nairobi via Namanga on the Nairobi Arusha road.
Access from Mombasa is mainly through Tsavo West via Kimana gate.
